2020 saw the onset of Covid-19 and the lockdowns it would bring, but for Palmerstown House Estate it saw the opportunity to plan and flourish. In March 2020 like every other business, we closed our doors to our customers and staff alike and as we headed off with laptops under our arms and we set our sights on the future.
A key part of course of that future was our essential maintenance team members and green keepers to keep the Golf Course in tip top condition, particularly in that smashing lockdown 1 weather. But while the golf course simply endured from an exterior perspective it was flourishing on paper…
Green’s 1 to 9 as everyone who has played the course will know are something special to behold, with the 7th Hole reportedly Designer Christy o Connor Juniors personal favourite. But, there was room for PAR-fection on the 10th
Originally flanked by bunkers, the new 10th Green was rebuilt and redesigned to create the 10th Island Green surrounding it almost entirely by water. The 10th green was launched on April 26th 2021 – re opening date.
Reaction to this unique feature has been everything from tactical to whimsical but resoundingly and repeatedly positive;
“Its made a huge improvement to the course. It’s one of the holes I look forward to playing even before my round starts. It’s definitely become our stand out signature hole on a super course. I’ve heard nothing but positive comments from both members & visitors. And you have to play it sober! 😊”
Noel O’Shea, Committee Member
“The redesigned 10th hole has become the centre piece of our championship course & it proves testing during every round. It is an excellent addition & a real feature hole to be enjoyed by members & visitors alike.”
Brendan Lennon, Committee Member
“As a member of PHE for many years – I have seen our 10th hole go from a raised green with bunkers all around it to an island surrounded with water. With certain pin positions & the run off areas greenside it makes this hole very tough but also extremely awarding when played correctly. I feel its now our iconic hole on the course & am very proud to tell people about our improved signature par 3.”
David Goodall, Club Member
“Easy…..Sawgrass comes to Ireland, Palmerstown House Estate’s addition of the redesigned 10th hole makes an already magnificent golf course superb! You walk on to the tee at the new 10th & you ignore the pin, then the wind swirls to create doubt! Overnight Palmerstown has created a new challenge & a signature hole, one for the selfies!!!”
Mick Murphy, Handicap Secretary
“An excellent hole that has you thinking about it long before you get there, just like the 17th at Sawgrass.”

We have received excellent feedback from both our members & visitors regarding the redesigned 10th hole. Many ask us how to play it, the thing to remember is the distance is still the same, so its about remaining positive & try to block out the water. Pick a club that will go to the heart of the green & forget about taking the flag on --- Palmerstown House Estate Pro's
And if all that wasn't enough the last word of course goes to General Manger Jerry :
“The 10th island green had been in talks by the team for a few years, the decision to go ahead got us all very excited. The 10th was one of the many ideas and improvement plans for what was already a magnificent and challenging championship golf course. Now seeing and hearing the positive feedback from our members and visitors gives us great pride here on the Estate. I look forward to the next phase of changes and improvements to further enhance golfing at Palmerstown.”
